What is a Doula?
A birth doula is a trained, nonmedical support person who provides continuous emotional, physical, and educational support from pregnancy through birth and into the early postpartum period. We offer calming presence and encouragement, teach and coach comfort measures like breathing, positions, and massage, and help explain procedures and options so you can make informed decisions. Because of the relationship built throughout your pregnancy, your doula provides consistent, familiar support that helps prepare for the birth you want, reduce anxiety around labor and birth, and ultimately improve outcomes for mom, baby and their families.
How We Support You
LOCAL FAMILIES
Our service area includes the greater Lehigh Valley and surrounding area. All services include the below, with options to add additional services to your package:
No-pressure consultation to get to know us better
A team of two doulas to support you
Two prenatal visits, either in our office or virtually
Virtual support during early labor
Hands on support during active labor and birth
Immediate postpartum support after the birth
Continued virtual support during the postpartum period
A postpartum visit within 8 weeks of birth
JUST IN TIME SERVICES
Designed for families choosing support late in pregnancy, or who felt prepared for labor without a doula but found the process to be more complicated than expected and need some last minute support.
Just in Time services provide the laboring mother with 5 hours of last minute, in-person support from one of our on-call doulas.
These services do not include prenatal planning, early labor support, choice of doula or postpartum support.

VIRTUAL SERVICES
Outside of our physical service area? That’s ok! Virtual services are designed to provide support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum regardless of where you are!

Where do I even begin…just don’t even question, hire any doula at The Growing Place!!! First time mom and this was (and continues to be) the support we needed through pregnancy and now postpartum. Since having my daughter, I have sent The Growing Place info to at least 3 other expecting mamas because I was just blown away with the care we received. This place is amazing. My husband and I have signed up for a doula and currently taking pre-birth classes. Absolutely not! We love partners who want to participate and will encourage them to do so to their comfort level. We also like to keep an eye on them during labor to make sure their needs are taken care of, too! We encourage breaks, answer their questions, and give them suggestions for how to best support you.

Studies of doula-assisted births worldwide show a decrease in cesareans birth by 51%, pitocin use by 71%, narcotics use by 35%, foreceps use by 57%, vacuum extraction by 32% and length of labor by 32%!
Specifically in North America, studies show having a doula reduces cesareans by 21%, foreceps/vacuum extraction by 32% and epidural use by 16%.

Studies show that when a doula is present in labor, babies have shorter hospital stays, fewer re-admissions to special care nurseries, have higher rates of successful breastfeeding and have a stronger bond with their mother.
